At this defining moment for a whole generation of young people, and for society, Alan argues for a refreshed, integrated national policy framework alongside a 'turbo-charging' of localised efforts to help young people into work, powered by collaboration between local authorities, employers, youth organisations and young people themselves.
Our YouthPath initiative is a great example of this kind of collaboration. Currently running in partnership with Combined Authorities in the Liverpool City Region, Greater Manchester and the West Midlands, YouthPath seeks to engage, inspire and support employers within a region to create meaningful opportunities for local young people. And through our network of youth organisations, connect them to young people facing barriers to work and ready for those opportunities.
In a panel discussion on the power of local, place-based initiatives, Alan joined representatives from Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, United Utilities and PGL Travel who talked about how working together through our YouthPath initiative is already helping to create meaningful opportunities for young people.
Young people like Ellie, who shared her experience of being out of work, having no housing stability, and struggling with the effect on her mental health. Ellie took part in a Movement to Work placement that turned things around and has resulted in her landing a permanent role with Department for Work and Pensions.
We also heard from Amy from Thrive Careers Hub about their work to support young people from across the Liverpool City Region, alongside Enrico, who has benefitted from that support, taking up a Movement to Work placement, giving him a pathway to permanent employment.
